Palace to sign Tshabalala and have an eye on Dulwich youngster

FYP believes Palace are ready to offer South African international Siphwe Tshabalala a contract, with the left-winger to join the club at the end of the season from Kaiser Chiefs.

Tshaba has been on trial with the Eagles for 10 days, with the official line being that we were taking a look at each other, to see if the transfer was the right fit for both parties.

Meanwhile the Daily Mail have published a story claiming that Palace have pipped Manchester United to the signing of Dulwich Hamlet 17-year-old hotly tipped defender Michael Chambers for around £80,000.

The club have so far denied the story.

New crest voting now open

Voting has now opened for the new Crystal Palace club crest which will be used exclusively starting the 2012/13 season. The voting will be open to season ticket holders (for seasons 2011/12 and 12/13), members, half season ticket holders and members of the Selhurst 6 and 12 initiatives. Voting will close at 1pm on Monday January 30.

Regarding the new club crest the club stated: "Crystal Palace Football Club are updating and modernising the club's crest, and we want you, the supporters, to help us make this important decision. We're looking to apply a fresh and simple design that will look great across our kits, merchandise and the stadium, and are very excited about refreshing the image of the club."

Some supporters are not so concerned about refreshing the image of the club, whilst others are relishing the opportunity. Yesterday social-networking site twitter was awash with Palace fans discussing the new club crests after links to the image galleries containing the proposed new badges were leaked on the site.

Voting is now open and Palace fans have a fortnight to choose the crest that'll be on the shirt of the Red and Blue Army next season.

Palace 1 Leeds 1 - Ten man Palace hold out for the draw

Chris Martin scored an early Palace goal before Sean Scannell's sending off for a second yellow just before half time left Palace to defend with 10 men for half of the game.

Robert Snodgrass pulled one back for the visitors but despite the referee's best efforts the game ended 1-1 as Julian Speroni had a storming game in the Palace net.

The Eagles started the better and had a flurry of early chances primarily through the goal-scorer Martin. Our first chance came straight from kick-off with Martin poking just wide at the near post.

Palace fans didn't have to wait too long for the deadlock to be broken as Martin found the back of the net with a similar effort to his first goal for the Eagles. The on-loan striker controlled the ball outside of the visitor's area before striking low and hard from 20 yards out.

Leeds responded well and forced a spectacular double save out of the sublime Speroni in what has been labelled by some fans on twitter as 'save of the season'.

On the stroke of half time Scannell picked up a soft second yellow to condemn Palace to 45 minutes with just 10 men in what was arguably one of the poorer performances from officials this season.

A valiant effort from Palace in the second couldn't keep the ball out of the net as substitute Snodgrass levelled for the visitors just after the hour mark. Ross McCormack's pass found it's way to the feet of forward who tucked the ball past Speroni to even the score.

Clayton, Pugh and Snodgrass all had long range efforts thwarted whilst Jules was called upon late in the game to deny former Palace loanee Mikael Forsell a dramatic late game-clincher.

After the game Dougie was delighted with the performance of his team.

"I thought our energy levels, especially after Tuesday night's game, were fantastic. I felt we controlled most of the first half which resulted in two or three opportunites and we took one of them to go in at half-time with a deserved lead. Unfortunately the goal set us back mentally and physically but we dug deep and used our experience," he said.

"A manager's always disappointed with any sending off. I felt the decision was made too quickly and looking back was probably not a sending off. It's unfortunate but we didn't use it as an excuse, we don't use excuses around here. We take it on the chin, get on with [the game] and gave a fantastic display that got us a point.

"Julian is the best goalkeeper outside the Premier League. It's a shame that he's not playing in the Premier League and getting the plaudits he deserves. Hopefully one day we will give him that football because (of) the performance levels he's produced over the last couple of that years. You've seen it today, wonderful reactions, and from a guy who comes in every morning and works his socks off."

Palace XI: Speroni; Dumbaya (McShane), McCarthy, Gardner, Parr; Scannell, Wright, KG, Ambrose; Easter (Murray), Martin (Zaha).

MOTM: Julian Speroni

FYP Preview: Palace v Leeds

Team News

Palace

Spirits are high at Selhurst at the moment after Tuesday night. The Home off the Eagles was full to the brim to cheer on the Red and Blue Army as they took a first leg lead over Cardiff in the League Cup semi-final.

This weekend we leave behind the magic of the cup and turn our focus yet again to the Championship clash against Leeds. Earlier in the season we lost 3-2 at Elland Road after a very good performance and Dougie's boys will want to return the favour this time.

Nathaniel Clyne, who has been out with a virus, will have a decision made as to his fitness on the morning of the game.

Joniesta, Dean Moxey, Lee Hills and Alex Marrow are still out injured.

Leeds

Robert Snodgrass could return after having his appendix removed however captain Jonny Howson and Patrick Kisnorbo will be out as will Alex Bruce and Leigh Bromby.

Key Players

Julian Speroni

As we know from recent seasons Leeds are a very capable side and we'll need our very own Argentine star player to be on top form if we want victory at Selhurst this Saturday.

Luciano Becchio

He always tends to score against us when he plays, this one.

He scored on his return to the Leeds squad last time out against us and will be wanting to add to his tally this time around.

Prediction

Though we've seemed to have struggled in recent years against 'used to be famous' Leeds I'm quite confident in all things regarding Palace at the moment and seeing that the game is being played at Selhurst I just don't see us losing this one. It'd be nice to win by a margin of more than one goal for a change, though I don't really see that happening either. Default score:

Palace 2-1 Leeds

Palace 1 Cardiff 0 - Gardner's header gives Palace first leg lead in semi-final

Anthony Gardner's header proved to be the difference, and indeed the only goal, in Tuesday night's Carling Cup semi-final first leg clash with Cardiff which Palace won 1-0.

As expected Cardiff came at the Eagles straight from kick-off, pressuring the Palace goal but to no avail as Julian Speroni proved it would take more than just a virus to see him beaten between the sticks, the Argentine easily keeping Joe Ralls' effort out of the net.

Cardiff came close again with Ben Turner, but he could do little but send his header over the bar from a Peter Whittingham corner.

At the other end it was Palace's turn to attack and some neat build-up play saw KG's shot on goal from midway inside the Cardiff penalty area saved by Tom Heaton.

Kenny Miller then struck a curled shot from the left of Speroni's 18-yard-box, almost grazing the 'keeper's far post as it went wide for a goal kick.

In the 43rd minute Palace took the lead through Gardner's headed effort. A cross in from the left from Darren Ambrose met Mile Jedinak, who headed the ball on for Gardner to nod into the back of the net.

In the second half Cardiff looked to have pulled one back through Miller's header, though referee Mike Dean adjudged Joe Mason to have fouled Speroni - a decision that Cardiff Boss Malky Mackay is more than a little unhappy with.

Two Ambrose free-kicks sailed over the bar - one looking far more convincing an effort than the other - and a late Cardiff surge could do nothing to change the score as Palace go into the second leg a goal to the good.

After the game Freedman told reporters: "It might be the crucial goal.

"We have a team set up to win away from home. We'll go there quietly confident and it'll be a very interesting game.

"I'm very pleased with performance on such a wonderful occasion," said the Doog.

"A lot of questions were asked of us from Cardiff because they are a good team but I felt on tonight's performances we deserved the narrow 1-0 victory.

"Nathaniel Clyne [is] still packed up in bed, Mile Jedinak and Paddy McCarthy are pretty much miracles to have played tonight, because they haven't trained at all and there were concerns as the game went on, but the character they showed was second to none.

"I feel that we were very unlucky in our preparation. We had to patch up a couple of players and get them out there. Mile Jedinak and Paddy McCarthy were real heroes tonight because they were on their sick-beds so full credit for them to answering the question that Cardiff asked of our character.

"I decided to look them in the eye and ask them if they were prepared to put their bodies on the line for the club and the answer was a convincing yes. Nathaniel Clyne couldn't make it tonight, he couldn't get out of his bed to come here so that was an easy decision. With such a big game I had to take that risk."

"Cardiff started and ended very well, but overall we defended fantastically well and we have some exciting players up top that can get you a goal."

On Gardner's goal: "I look for my defenders to defend. If I'm going to give Anthony Gardner a pat on the back it's for his defending. Julian Speroni is simply the best goalkeepers in this division and that allows Anthony Gardner, Paddy McCarthy and Peter Ramage to defend the way they did tonight. That allows your Darren Ambrose, Glenn Murray, Wilfried Zaha to get the headlines. I look at Anthony Gardner and thought - solid as a rock. That's why he'll get my man of the match, not for his goal."

Praising the old heads amongst a young Palace side: "I've been there in the darkest days of this club in administration. Paddy McCarthy and Darren Ambrose when they didn't get paid for months and had ten points taken off them, they can't get lower than they've been. Anything to them is a bonus and their enthusiasm to keep playing for this club spreads to the youngsters. Whatever comes their way they deserve."

There is still at least 90 minutes of football left to play in South Wales, should Dougie's boys win or draw on the 24th of January Palace will be playing in the League Cup final at Wembley.

Palace XI: Speroni; Ramage, McCarthy, Gardner, Parr; Zaha (Easter), KG, Jedinak, Ambrose; Martin (Scannell), Murray.
