About FYP

In the summer of 2003, after the demise of the popular One More Point fanzine, two philanthropists set up a new Palace fanzine in OMP’s wake. James Daly, a journalism student and Mark Tyrrell, an entrepreneurial dolt, jointly set up Five Year Plan fanzine.

The first issue was launched in September of that year and received worldwide acclaim. Ok, maybe not worldwide acclaim but it sold a lot of copies, probably due to people’s anticipation of a new Palace product. The mag was filled with terrace-humour type articles, irreverent musings and general fun. The eds wanted to stay away from mainstream type production and wanted to emulate OMP and Eagle Eye of the late 1980s and early 90s. The feedback was promising and although issue two failed to sell as well, FYP developed a strong fan base and subscriber database (I say strong, it was more than 20).

As issues 3, 4 and 5 were produced and sold FYP developed as a fanzine, tightening up its editorial, only letting a few typos through the net and increasing its writer base. For the record, we let anyone who has a passion for Palace write. In two years we’ve had journos, students, OAPs and even girls writing for us. Imagine that!

In the summer of 2004, Mark left to pursue other interests. He wouldn’t tell me what they were but I reckon they involved badgers and loft extensions.

So, James was left to fly the FYP flag alone. He changed the format and style of the mag instantly in an attempt to distance the fanzine from anything else sold at the Palace. Issue 6, the first in A5 format, was a success as was issue 7 and then 8 (the first issue with a colour front cover) which subsequently sold out.

In September 2008 FYP welcomed Andy Street to the fray as Assistant Editor. This basically meant editor JD could give Andy all the boring stuff he didn’t want to do, but still get all the acclaim. Andy has been a somewhat regular contributor to FYP and a lifelong Palace fan, with all the bruises and painful memories it has brought along the way.

Having hit the 20-issue mark and counting, FYP is the alternative read for Palace fans and a place for any Eagles followers to voice their opinions.

Meet the FYP team

James Daly - editor

When JD was a little boy all he wanted to do was write about Crystal Palace. That he is the founder and editor of Palace's only fanzine is pretty much a life ambition filled for him. Never mind that he's written for the Independent on Sunday, The Guardian and (ahem) the Trinidad & Tobago Express.

Andy Street - assistant editor

JD and Streety met ten years ago on a 5-a-side field and on the drive back to Selhurst afterwards a bond was formed. Well, JD was asleep, but Streety just assumed a bond was formed. JD invited Street to join the FYP team in 2008 and they haven't looked back. Literally - because they are mostly being chased by angry readers.

Stephen Bridle - web editor

A new addition to the FYP team, Brids met JD and Streety at the protests against Agilo in May, after recognising JD's face from TV (a burden the FYP editor has to deal with on a constant basis). Journalism student Brids has quickly become an important cog in the FYP machine, churning out articles, running the web side of things and meeting his hero Dougie Freedman.

Dan Cooper - features writer

Another new face at FYP Towers, Coops has brought a dose of humour, a sprinkling of optimism and a healthy dollop of sarcasm to proceedings, an essential recipe for any Palace fan. Dan's arrival brings the FYP team to five, as the boys plan on taking over the blogosphere - that or forming the worst 5-a-side team ever.

Sam Hesketh - features writer

Whatever you do, don't call Hesketh 'Hesketh'. Anyone that doesn't address the FYP writer as 'Eskef' can consider themselves involved in an instant rap feud. The music PR chap is famous for a few things; 1) His love of all things hip hop, 2) His even bigger love of Sean 'Big Scanz' Scannell, 3) Introducing the phrase "Man a pepper" to the FYP team. For that we will always be thankful.

Rob Sutherland - features writer

Rob's first game was a 1-0 home defeat to Swindon in 1996. Somehow that lit a fire in his belly and he's still a Palace fan all these years later. Possessing the loudest clap ever heard at Selhurst, and loudest voice witnessed on the streets of Norwood, Rob can almost still be heard from his new home in northern California.

John Daly - chief seller

Chief seller JD Snr is the man in charge of getting FYP to you, the masses. Usually found in his favourite spot down the bottom of the Holmesdale (conveniently outside the Clifton Arms), he'll happily accept a pint of ale instead of the £1.50 for each copy (allegedly).

Seb Daly - FYP photographer

Another member of the Daly family involved in FYP, Seba is our man at the top of the Holmesdale on match days selling FYP to the punters. He is also the official FYP photgrapher and you can see his array of snaps on the FYP website and in every print issue we release. For some reason, most of them are of the Crystals Cheerleaders.
